Dementia series
My mother suffered from vascular dementia for many years before she died in September 2012. As both a daughter and a caregiver, I had to watch and try to help as she gradually became increasingly confused and delusional. Like other people suffering from vascular dementia, Alzheimer's, and other forms of dementia, my mother experienced a wide range of emotions, from fear, anger, and bitterness to loneliness, sadness, and depression. My siblings and I had to try to help her manage those emotions and the behaviors they inspired. It was heartbreaking, frustrating, and exhausting.
Years later, I began creating these paintings. They are based on my mother's (and my family's) journey, but I hope other people who have experienced the devastating effects of dementia in their lives will also feel a connection to these works.
